Regularly deep clean your sink to maintain a hygienic kitchen environment. After all, the sink is the area in the kitchen that comes into contact with food most frequently. Here, you'll discover how to properly clean your sink, what to keep in mind when cleaning the drain basket, and how to ensure the P-trap stays clean long-term for a sanitary kitchen! At the same time, you'll extend the lifespan of your sink and kitchen faucet, as proper care reduces wear and tear.
Preventing Water Spot Formation
For easier cleaning, wipe your sink dry with a microfiber cloth after each use. This prevents water droplets from evaporating on the surface and leaving unsightly water spots. Especially on dark surfaces, these stains can detract from the sink's overall appearance. Drying with a microfiber cloth effectively prevents this issue.
Home Remedies for Removing Limescale
If limescale stains have already formed, try using household cleaners like vinegar or lemon-based solutions—these proven cleaners effectively remove limescale without damaging sink surfaces when used properly, and they're naturally biodegradable. Simply apply the cleaner to the soft side of a sponge and wipe down the sink and faucet surfaces. Avoid scrubbing with the rough side of the sponge for extended periods. Finally, rinse the sink thoroughly with clean water and dry the surface with a microfiber cloth.
Cleaning the Drain Basket
While cleaning the sink and faucet is straightforward, tackling the drain basket and P-trap can be a bit tricky. In fact, all you need are the right techniques!
Before cleaning the drain basket, heat 250 ml of water in a kettle. Sprinkle dishwashing powder over the closed drain basket, then pour in the boiling water. Let the mixture sit for about 30 seconds before scrubbing the drain basket insert and drain opening edges with a dish brush. Next, open the drain to drain the dishwashing powder solution. Remove the drain basket's mesh screen and clean the circular drain holes with the dish brush. Finally, reinsert the drain basket and rinse thoroughly with plenty of clean water.
Friendly reminder: If you have sensitive skin, please wear rubber gloves for protection when cleaning the drain basket.
